General requirement for all students

To apply for this course, you must hold either:

• a current CASA Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with 50+ hours solo cross-country time;
• OR a current CASA Private Pilot Licence (PPL) with 50+ hours solo cross-country time;
• AND a Class Rating – Multi-Engine Aeroplane (MEA) issued by CASA.

To apply for this course as an international student (and then apply for a Student Visa), you must:

• aged over 18 years on commencement of training, evidenced by an official birth certificate
• prove your identity with a current and valid passport
• ability to hold an Aviation Reference Number (ARN)  
• ability to hold an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)
• ability to hold a CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate
• have achieved a minimum individual score of 6.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, Academic Category
• prove your academic ability to undertake this course with a senior-secondary school certificate or a high school certificate, and a transcript of your subject results 

• 53.0 hours of flight training, including up to:
  • 3.8 hours, Dual, Night VFR C172
  • 1.0 hour, Solo, Night VFR C172
  • 2.0 hours, Dual, FSTD-SEA
  • 24.2 hours, Dual, IFR PA44
  • 19.0 hours, Dual, FSTD-MEA
  • 3.0 hours, IR-MEA Flight Test PA44
• pre and post-flight briefings
• Landing fees and Airservices charges
• CASA IR-MEA flight test fee (first attempt)
• CAE Melbourne student onboarding, facilities, and support services (excluding CAE Melbourne student village)
• Orientation services for overseas students on a student visa
• 41 hours of classroom tuition of aeronautical knowledge with the CASA Instrument Rating Exam (IREX)

A total of 14 units of competency comprising: 13 core units listed below, plus 1 specialist elective unit from the specialist elective units listed below. 

The specialist elective unit must contribute to the vocational outcomes of the qualification.

• AVIF0030 Manage safe flight operations
• AVIH0013 Plan a flight under instrument flight rules
• AVIH0017 Navigate aircraft under instrument flight rules
• AVIW0032 Operate and manage aircraft systems
• AVIY0033 Operate aircraft using aircraft flight instruments
• AVIY0044 Conduct a 2D instrument approach
• AVIY0050 Perform instrument arrival and standard arrival route procedures
• AVIY0073 Operate aircraft in the traffic pattern at night
• AVIY0074 Perform non published instrument departure procedures
• AVIY0075 Perform published instrument departure procedures
• AVIY0076 Perform visual circling approach
• AVIY0081 Conduct a 2D global navigation satellite system non-precision instrument approach

Specialist Elective Units:

• AVIYH0015 Plan a flight under night visual flight rules
• AVIH0016 Navigate aircraft under night visual flight rules
• AVIY0079 Conduct a 3D instrument landing system instrument approach

*This course requires the applicant to have a minimum of 5 hours of flight time as a pilot at night, if you yet to meet the requirements, an extra 5 hours of NVFR training in our C172 aircraft is required before the commencement of this course. There is no work placement for this program.

On successful completion of the full course, students will attain:

• an AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) – a nationally recognised qualification issued by CAE Melbourne Flight Training as Registered Training Organisation (provider number 46506); and
• an Instrument Rating issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)

The AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) Multi-Engine course fee is: $31.092.00.

The following items are not included in the course fee and will incur additional charges:

• Additional, repeat, or remedial flight lessons
• ASPEQ CASA theory exams
• Repeat flight tests or ratings
• Airport landing fees not specified in the syllabus
• External fees payable to third parties, including but not limited to:
  • Books and maps
  • Airservices and CASA publications
  • Navigation equipment
  • Uniforms and headsets
  • Any other equipment required for planning and conducting a flight

Note:

1. CASA licence fees are payable directly to CASA at the time of application, please note these fees are not included in the total amount payable to CAE.
2. Participants will be provided with course notes and student ID but will be required to purchase other essential items from external suppliers including, textbooks, publications, maps and charts, headsets and other equipment required to plan and prepare for a flight. Students will be required to obtain an ASIC and a CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate.
3. Additional fees and costs are applicable to the flying training that form part of this course. You should take these flying training fees into account when considering this course. Teaching methods used in the AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) Multi-Engine course include:

• Classroom teaching
• Pre and post-flight briefing
• Practical flight instruction in aircraft and classroom
• Role-play of simulated flight and ground instructional sequences

This course includes 41 hours of classroom tuition covering aeronautical knowledge topics to enable the student to undertake the CASA Instrument Rating Exam (IREX).

Throughout training, all students must demonstrate competency in specified elements and performance criteria. Progressive assessment is recorded throughout the course.

A Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (IR-MEA) will be granted on successful completion of the following assessments:

• CASA Theory Examination (IREX)
• Instrument Rating Flight Test
